Extended SMTP uses EHLO to let a server advertise capabilities. Common extensions include STARTTLS, SIZE, 8BITMIME, PIPELINING, SMTPUTF8 and authentication mechanisms on submission services.
Capabilities can change after STARTTLS, so a client normally issues EHLO again after establishing TLS.
