LEARNING PATH
Learn email end to end
Email makes more sense when you learn the pieces in the order a message actually depends on them. This path uses the existing howto.email library rather than making you guess what to read next.
1. Build the mental model
Start with How email works, then email architecture and DNS for email.
2. Understand SMTP and routing
Read the SMTP reference, email routing, MX records, and why email is store-and-forward.
3. Understand the message itself
Continue with message format, email headers, MIME, and the header analysis lab.
4. Learn authentication
Read email authentication, then study SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and alignment.
5. Add transport security
Learn STARTTLS, MTA-STS, TLS-RPT, and DANE for SMTP.
6. Understand deliverability and reputation
Move into deliverability, reputation signals, list hygiene, and bounce types.
7. Learn security and operations
Read the email security model, email threats, BEC, and mail-flow logging.
8. Practice troubleshooting
Use the troubleshooting hub, work through the DNS lab and SMTP session lab, then inspect a real domain with Domain Check.
